A letter from the founder
Why I started Out
on the Fairway
I got into golf in my 30s through driving ranges, lessons, public courses and eventually joining a club in Newcastle. The more I played, the more I enjoyed it.
But I also started to wonder: where is the gay golfing community?
There must be gay, lesbian and bisexual people across the North East who play golf, want to try golf, or used to play and would like to get back into it. But golf can feel like quite an invisible place for us.
The North East has inclusive sports groups for running, rugby, football and other sports. Golf just seemed to be missing from that picture.
I have met plenty of friendly and welcoming people through golf, and this group is not about criticising the sport or the people in it. But I have also come across occasional attitudes, comments or assumptions that reminded me how different golf might have felt in years gone by, when being gay was much less openly accepted.
That is why I wanted to create something positive.
Out on the Fairway is a relaxed social golf group for gay, lesbian and bisexual golfers, friends and allies across North East England and nearby.
It is for people who already play, people who are brand new, people who only go to the driving range, and people returning to the game after time away.
It is not about excluding anyone. It is about making gay golfers more confident, helping people meet others with similar life experiences, and giving more people the chance to enjoy golf while feeling comfortable and relaxed.
